Donate your car by Dec 31 in Jacksonville for this year’s tax break

In Jacksonville, the IRS counts the donation date as the pickup date. To claim this year’s deduction, your car must be towed by Dec 31. Free pickup, non-running vehicles OK—schedule in 2 minutes.

In Jacksonville, the IRS donation date is the date your vehicle is physically picked up—not the day you call or submit the form. To claim your car donation on this year’s taxes, Drive Forward Jax must have your car towed away on or before December 31. That’s why we urge Jacksonville donors to schedule pickup at least 3–5 business days before December 31 so we can secure your time slot. Heritage for the Blind, our 501(c)(3) partner, runs Monday–Saturday through the holiday season, with free towing and no inspection or repairs required.

Drive Forward Jax makes it fast and local. Whether you’re in Riverside, San Marco, Arlington, Mandarin, Northside, Southside, the Beaches (Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach), Orange Park, or anywhere in the greater Jacksonville Metro, we’ll arrange free pickup—running or not. After your vehicle sells, Heritage for the Blind will mail your written acknowledgment (and IRS Form 1098-C for vehicles over $500). Even if that letter arrives later, your deduction year is locked in by the actual pickup date. If you want this year’s tax benefit and a meaningful impact for people who are blind or visually impaired, now is the time to schedule.

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Start the 2-minute donation form or call

2 minutes

Share your Jacksonville location, basic vehicle info, and best contact number. It takes about two minutes and there’s no obligation. Tell us you need pickup by December 31 so we prioritize your year-end tax deadline and confirm we serve your neighborhood in the Jacksonville Metro.

2

Choose a pickup window before Dec 31

5 minutes

Our team, dispatching Monday–Saturday, will call to schedule your free tow. To safely meet the IRS deadline, aim for a pickup at least 3–5 business days before December 31. We’ll work to lock in a date and time that fits your schedule in Jacksonville.

3

Prepare the title and access to the vehicle

10–15 minutes

Locate your vehicle title and remove personal items. The car doesn’t need to run, be clean, or pass inspection. Just make sure our tow truck can reach it in your driveway, condo lot, workplace, or street parking anywhere in the Jacksonville Metro area.

4

Vehicle is picked up – donation date is set

Pickup day

When the tow truck arrives on your scheduled day, sign any required paperwork and hand over the keys and title. The exact pickup date is what the IRS treats as your donation date. A successful pickup on or before December 31 locks in this year’s deduction.

5

Receive your tax acknowledgment and file

After sale

After Heritage for the Blind sells your vehicle, they’ll mail your written acknowledgment, including IRS Form 1098-C for vehicles valued over $500. Even if this arrives in the new year, your eligible deduction applies to the tax year in which the vehicle was picked up.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Pickup date sets your deduction year

For IRS purposes, the donation date for your car is the date it’s physically picked up, not when you schedule it. If the tow happens on or before December 31, you can generally claim the deduction for that tax year.

Written acknowledgment is required

To claim a car donation, you must have a written acknowledgment from the charity describing the vehicle and stating that you received no substantial goods or services in return. Heritage for the Blind will mail this to you after your car is sold.

Form 1098-C for vehicles over $500

If the claimed value of your donated vehicle is more than $500, the charity issues IRS Form 1098-C with the gross sale price. You attach this form to your return to support the deduction and keep a copy for your records.

Deduction usually equals sale price

In most cases, your deduction is limited to the amount the charity receives when it sells your vehicle, not the Kelley Blue Book value. Heritage for the Blind reports this sale amount to you (and the IRS) on your acknowledgment or Form 1098-C.

Itemizing on Schedule A is required

Vehicle donations are charitable contributions. To benefit, you must itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal income tax return. If you take the standard deduction, you generally cannot claim an additional write-off for your car donation.

FAQ

If I schedule before December 31, but pickup is in January, which tax year is it?
The IRS goes by the actual pickup date, not the day you schedule. If your car is towed in January, it counts as a donation for the new tax year—even if you called or completed the form in December. That’s why we recommend scheduling 3–5 business days before December 31.
What is the absolute deadline to donate my car for this year’s taxes in Jacksonville?
Your car must be physically picked up on or before December 31 for this year’s deduction. Because tow schedules fill quickly around the holidays, we encourage Jacksonville donors to start the process 3–5 business days before year-end so we can secure a pickup slot that meets the IRS cutoff.
Do you pick up non-running or damaged cars in the Jacksonville Metro?
Yes. Drive Forward Jax accepts non-running, high-mileage, or damaged vehicles, and towing is free. As long as the tow truck can safely access the car at your home, apartment, or workplace anywhere in the Jacksonville Metro, we’ll arrange pickup—no repairs, emissions, or inspection required.
When will I get my tax receipt or Form 1098-C?
After your vehicle is picked up, Heritage for the Blind will arrange its sale. Once it sells, they’ll mail you a written acknowledgment, and if the value is over $500, IRS Form 1098-C showing the sale price. This may arrive after year-end, but your deduction year is still tied to the pickup date.
How much can I deduct for my Jacksonville car donation?
In most cases, your deduction is limited to the amount Heritage for the Blind receives from selling your vehicle. That sale amount will be listed on your acknowledgment or Form 1098-C. You must itemize deductions on Schedule A to claim it. For personal tax advice, consult your tax professional.
Do you operate around the holidays and weekends?
Yes. Heritage for the Blind dispatches free towing Monday–Saturday throughout the holiday season in the Jacksonville Metro, subject to availability. Year-end is busy, so the earlier you contact Drive Forward Jax in December, the easier it is to lock in a pickup time before December 31.
What areas of Jacksonville do you serve for year-end donations?
We serve donors throughout the Jacksonville Metro, including Riverside, Avondale, San Marco, Downtown, Southside, Arlington, Mandarin, Northside, Westside, and the Beaches area, as well as nearby communities like Orange Park and Fleming Island. If you’re unsure, just ask when you call or submit the form.
