If you’re in Jacksonville staring at a car with no keys and no title, you are not stuck—and you do not have to pay to get rid of it. With Drive Forward Jax, you can still donate that problem vehicle to benefit Heritage for the Blind. The keys are not the deal-breaker. The title is. Once you have a replacement title in your name, we can arrange fast, free pickup anywhere in the Jacksonville Metro and you’ll receive a tax receipt for your donated vehicle.
Here’s how it works in Florida: you’ll first request a duplicate title from the Florida DHSMV. It’s a simple form, a small state fee, and typically a short wait. While that’s processing, we’ll help you think through tow-truck access—whether the car’s tucked behind a house in Riverside, sitting in an apartment lot on Southside, or parked at a shop in Orange Park or Arlington. When your duplicate title arrives, you sign it over, we dispatch a flatbed that can load your keyless vehicle, and you’re done. No repair bills, no storage stress—just a clean handoff that supports important services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm you’re the legal owner in Florida
Make sure the old, lost title was in your name and there are no unresolved liens. If you financed the car, confirm the loan is paid off and the lien has been released. This matters because Florida will only issue a duplicate title to the legal owner on record. If you’re unsure, you can contact the Florida DHSMV or your last lender to check.
2. Apply for a Florida duplicate title right away
Next, request a duplicate or replacement title through the Florida DHSMV or your local tax collector’s office in Duval, Clay, or St. Johns County. There’s a state fee and a short processing period, often 1–4 weeks depending on method. This is the critical step—without a valid title in your name, we cannot legally complete the donation or transfer ownership, even if we tow the car.
3. Call Drive Forward Jax while the title is processing
Once you’ve submitted the duplicate title application, contact Drive Forward Jx to start your donation file. Tell us the car has no keys and no title in hand yet. We’ll note your situation, explain the next steps, and answer questions about Florida paperwork and tax deductions, so that as soon as your title arrives, we can move quickly to schedule pickup.
4. Plan for towing a keyless vehicle in Jacksonville Metro
During scheduling, clearly explain that the car has no keys and can’t be started. We’ll arrange a flatbed or appropriate tow truck that can winch and load a non-running, locked, or steering-locked vehicle. Whether your car is in a tight driveway in San Marco, a condo lot at the Beaches, or a storage yard off I-95, we’ll work with you to be sure our driver can safely access and load it.
5. Receive your duplicate title and sign it over
When your new Florida title arrives by mail or in person, sign it where indicated for the seller/donor. Have your ID ready. At pickup, you’ll hand the signed title to the tow operator or follow our instructions for returning it. This is what legally transfers the vehicle from you to the charity so you are no longer responsible for registration, insurance, or future issues with the car.
6. Free pickup, tax receipt, and a clean break
With your signed duplicate title, we complete scheduling and tow your vehicle at no cost anywhere in the greater Jacksonville Metro. After pickup, you’ll receive a tax receipt. In many cases you can claim at least a $500 deduction; higher values will use IRS Form 1098-C. You’ve cleared an unwanted, keyless car, avoided selling hassles, and helped Heritage for the Blind provide vital services.
Potential complications to watch for
Lien or loan still showing on the Florida title record
Tip: If a lienholder is still listed on the Florida record, the state may not issue a clean duplicate title until the lien is properly released. Contact the lender (or their successor) first to get a lien satisfaction recorded. Starting this early avoids last-minute surprises when you’re ready to donate and ensures a smooth transfer to the charity.
Car is blocked in or inaccessible for a flatbed
Tip: Missing keys are fine as long as the tow truck can reach and safely load the vehicle. If the car is behind other vehicles, inside a locked garage, or on soft ground, coordinate access beforehand. Move other cars, secure any needed gate codes, and clear obstacles so the flatbed can get close enough. This prevents re-scheduling and delays in your donation.
Title not yet in your name after a private purchase
Tip: If you bought the car from someone else but never transferred the title into your name before it was lost, you’ll need to resolve that first. Florida typically requires a clear chain of ownership. You may need a replacement title from the previous owner or extra paperwork. We can explain what the charity needs, but the DMV has the final say on ownership requirements.
Out-of-state titles or moves into Jacksonville
Tip: If the lost title is from another state and you recently moved to Jacksonville, you may need to request a duplicate from that original state before donating. Each state sets its own rules and forms. Check the original state’s DMV website, start the duplicate request there, and tell us which state issued the title so we can guide you on how to sign it over correctly.
